Padeletti Brunello 1986

They say opening an old wine is like stepping back in time. I'm not old enough to say much about time travel, but I can say that these great old wines are unlike any other. This is only the second 'old' wine I've had; the other I also drank this month. I can't say I have that much experience in the matter, but none the less, I do want to share my thoughts. Padeletti, Brunello maker, restaurant owner and a good friends of ours, already have a name for themselves in the wine world, and recently recieved rave reviews by Decanter magazine and Duemilavini for the latest entry, the 2004 Brunello Reserva.
We have, however, known about their amazing wines since we first meet them three years ago. Our love for their wine took us to another level last night when opened a bottle from 1986. After letting the wine breath for awhile, after all, there was air from 24 years ago in there... we poured two glasses and cheered to new tastes. At first, I must admit, I was slightly upset about the light oxidized taste I found. I thought, ok lets wait another minute or two and see if the glass evolves some more, which it did. As time went on the brown-orange wine opened, and aromas of chocolate, sage, vanilla, sweet tobacco, liquorish, balsalmic, pepper, and rich, ripe fruits. In some way it reminded me of a port, but not as heavy or syrupy. The Brunello still carried itself well, on its last legs of acidity which tingled the back of my tongue, and was warm, round and full-bodied like any red from Montalcino. We paired it with another favorite of ours, steak tartar, and two went hand in hand. Two classics, what a night! With new information at hand, my research on trying new, old wines will continue; I look to the future to see whats next.
Padeletti will be at the Hotel Monaco in Venice the 17 of October for the Brunello Festival.
