Terrano

In Mogliano Veneto, there is a restaurant called La Fenice. They have a very nice sized Cantina, which includes many wines (not available to customers) from countries all over the world. On one afternoon we stopped in to drink an 'ombra' or a glass of wine in venetian. Our ombra was a glass of Terrano, a indiginous grape from Fruili Venezia Giulia. The particular brand was a product of Castello di Rubbia at San Michele del Carso in the Province of Gorizia.
Terrano is a red wine that has a good consistancy, intensity and complessity. The perfumes reminded me of viola, woods, wild grass and herbs and a hint of grafite. On the tongue it was dry with a good amount of alcohol. The freshness and tannicity unfortunately are covered a bit by the sapidity, typical of the type of grape, and the structure wasgood but also a little short. Anyhow it is wine to keep in concideration, good for food or a just a lighter drink between friends.

Caramia

After having the bottle of Cirò, we went on to our next. A Negroamaro-Cabernet mix from Lecce in Puglia, this bottle by Caramia blends old school with new. Negroamaro, an autoctono grape is known for the amaro or bitter taste the wine has. It has a medium structure, a bright red color and intense aromas that reminds of blackberries and freshcut vines- it can even make rosè. On the other hand, Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most well known grapes and wines in the world. Its a powerful with perfect amounts of tannins, salts and glycerine. With a red almost blue hue, the perfumes are elegant clearly recognizable- herbs, fruits, flowers, spices, vegatables, mint and cacao. The structure continues in its smoothness, freshness, tannicity and persistence, while letting us know that its past time in barrique. This particulare mix of negroamaro and cabernet is strong but not overwhelming, slightly sweet while tannic. A good companion for any meat dish.

Cirò is a wine made by the Galioppo grape, from Calabria, Italy. The most known DOC from this region, it has a story that goes back to the Greek Empire. The particular bottle we opened last week, by Enotria was quite good. It has ruby red with granate highlights or even slightly orange after aging. Well-rounded, intense perfumes with notes of spices, liquorish and berries, on the palate these tastes carried through with a great softness, light tannins and a slight sapidity. One would definatly enjoy this wine with something simple like a cheese or salami plate or with a meal of salvagge meats or a roast.
Vote 76/100

Osteria senza oste

Sometimes you can find the most amazing places without even looking for them. A friend had once mentioned to us that in the Prosecco wine region (about a half hour from our house) there was this place- a restaurant, kindof, but without waiters, bartenders, not even a hostess- but that it was great. So a few months later we decided to take his advice and go in search of this Osteria without a host (or in Italian Osteria senza Oste).
Without any internet site or address to follow, or anyone even knowing of this place, we drove into Valdobbiadene hoping to find someone, anyone, who could help us out. We stopped after a little while to get gas and ask for directions- and our intendent had heard of the Osteria! Following his directions we came across a sign (on a pink piece of paper) just off the road between vineyards with a questions mark and an arrow on it. We persued. A minute later, another one, and so on until we came to the final question mark. We parked and once again chased after the strange sign. After a short passage into a field, an old brick building was before us with an open door. Two people exited and we knew we had found our place. Inside were four tables, a fridge and a cupboard. On one of these tables were directions- help yourself and leave the money in the box. Inside the fridge we a few bottles of Prosecco col fondo, and on the labels where the price. Same thing for the food in the cupboard. So we took a bottle, left the money in the box and went outside. To our right was another passage, So we decided to take a look. Walking a minute or two past the hanging grapes we arrived at a clearing where a covered platform, open on all four sides stood overlooking the valley below. It was the most unexpected, beautiful and peaceful place. And so, we sat in silence sipping our wine, indulging in the view.

Schiava Gentile

Schiava Gentile is a grape found mainly in the Alto Adige region in Italy. Since it is grown in the north and is therefor a colder region, reds tend to be lighter and fresher, carrying qualities almost like a white. This particular bottle by Franz Haas has light and transparent red color with likable smells of cherries and berries; a light tannicity and has a refreshing quality. Its delicate and good with salami, white meats and even grilled fish. And since Alto Adige is the Austrian region of Italy- in fact german is their first language, you can drink the good bottle the way they do... with canederli and speck!
Vote 80/100

Megara and Centrale

Ah... tartar! I happen to love raw foods- and steak tartar is my favorite. At the restaurant we went to friday night, one of our favorites in our area (provice of Venezia) called Alla Centrale in a town known as Scorzè, we gorged on our favorite tartar of them all. In fact we love they way they make it so much here that we taped it and put it on Youtube! But the great eats don't stop there. Normally we get a florentina or a porterhouse in english type steak which you can cook to your own perfection on a mini flat grill they bring to your table. This time however we decided to try something different, that is after the tartar appetizer. We split a plate of grilled ribs and one of lamb chops, both were fabulous!
Centrale also has a good wine list- all Italian and covers all the major reds from Amarone to Brunello, we tried one called Megara, a 2004 Frappato/Syrah blend from a Sicilian vineyard named Duca di Salaparuta. I happened to like this wine more than my husband- maybe because I have a love for spicy wines like syrah and zinfandel. A deep red color with berries spices for aromas, the taste was a well rounded, velvety mix of fruits and herbs. We both think that when tasted with the meat the wine and food really played well off each other. The tannicity of the wine cleared your palate from the fattiness of the chops and ribs, and the spices in both the wine and the food pared fantastically. So for the first time Paolo and I have different votes.

Nebbiolo d'Alba

Typical of March, we've had a lot of rain. Overcast days where you just dont want to go outside- which creates perfect days to try new wines! On one these days we decided to try a Nebbiolo d'Alba by the vineyard Duchessa Lia, 2004. A DOC wine in a sea of DOCG's, nebbiolo is usually known for Barolo, Barbaresco, Ghemme and Gattinara. Being that this particular wine comes from the Alba region and not specifically Barolo or Barbaresco it because classified as a DOC only, therefor less known- and I must say less powerful. Barolos are probably one of the best wines in Italy and the nebbiolo from Piedmonte the best or the best. However I have to say I was a little disappointes with this one. Not that it was a bad wine at all, but it definatly did not measure up to the rest. Lighter in color and taste, it was still tannic and robust enough that one could see the resemblance. The intense ruby color made me think that it may have just needed more time to rest and develope before it was to be opened. I would consider it a wine to be drunk with a meal instead of contemplation, maybe with grilled or roasted meats.

Cabernet Sauvignon Scubla

On cold nights its a wonderful thing to sit by the fire with a glass of wine. To warm our insides this time we opened a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon by Scubla, 2004. We had originally acquired this bottle at the Scubla estate during Cantina Aperta last year. (Cantina Aperte is one day out of the year when almost all of the vineyards in Italy are open to public, so everyone can try the wines without appointment)
And so on this cold night in front of the fireplace, the four of us (we had friends over for dinner) we drank this bottle from Fruili-Venezia Giulia. A typical Cab, it had a ruby-red color with granite highlights and a desirable transperancy and consistancy. Perfumes were that of violas, cherries, vine tomatoes and touch of pepper. On the tongue it was warm and enticing with just the right amounts of sapidity and tannicity. A good intensity with a persistancy to follow.
Vote 83/100

Voto 83/100.

Vinosia

During our time at Mulino Stucky we also encountered many wines made from the Aglianico grape. The one I'm going to write about now is a Taurasi from the agency Vinosia. Created by brothers Mario and Luciano Ercolino, they are driven to make quality wines at affordable prices. Irpinia, Campagne, the promised land for many southern grapes, is where this wine is produces and at its best.
Taurasi's in general are very powerful and well-rounded wines, and this one is no different. Deep purple, and hardly transperant with slightly spicy, mature blackberries and currents and liquorish perfumes, we were anticipating the first taste, and we weren't dissapointed. Warm, soft and velvety with a great persistancy, one could also tell it spent time in barrique.
Vote 92/100

Just before this Taurasi we had also tasted Vinosia's Doceassaje. Made from Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, which are the other two most important and famous grapes of Irpania. A light colored and refeshing white, Doceassaje has incredable smells of fresh flowers and herbs and is slightly mineral. Well structed and balanced, it would be great with grilled fish or just sipping while sitting outside and watching the tides.
Vote 90/100

Pecorino d'Abruzzo

Tonight we opened a delightful bottle I bought today at the supermarket- and for only 4 euros I thought this interesting wine must best tried. Pecorino, usually a famous name for cheese, is a wine grown mainly in Marche but also found in Umbria or in this case Abruzzo. A grape that was starting to go into extinction until recently saved, it is vivacious and straw colored, with hints of flowers and exotic fruits like pinapple or calli-lilies. Slightly mineral, but soft and well balanced, it would be great with broiled or fried fish, chowders, or cheese like Tomà in which we tasted tonight. This particular bottle is called "Sistina IGT", in Terre di Chieti and produced by Citra Azienda d'Abruzzo, 2006.

A word I really love saying! Ok, we were fortunate enough to taste this wine also at the Molino Stucky event, and even this wine is extremely rare to find outside of its region; a region quite know for its vacation spots- Cinque Terre. This sweet wine is produced by the Azienda Agricola Buranco and is made from the Bosco, Vermentino and Albarola grapes. This wine can only be produced in certain years when the sun in strong enough to 'bake' the skins without destroying the grapes. After a short 'appassimento' the wine then spends a short time in barrique.
This delightfully golden treat, has perfumes of dried apricots and almonds. Velvetty and sweet, but not excessive, acidic and mineral, perfectly structured, I would pair this fantastic wine with soft or aged cheeses.
Vote 93/100

Before tasting the Schiacchetrà, we tried the same grape mix in its dry form. Light in color, with marine reminding smells and a hint of wild flowers, it was a reminder of where it came from. Sharp, seaside cliffs with warm summers, this Cinque Terre Doc is light and crisp and perfect with shellfish or likely cooked fish.
Vote 84/100

From the 3rd to the 5th of March, the Molino Stucky Hotel on the island of Guidecca in Venice hosted the Gusto in Scena event. Even with the strong winds and rain that were trying to keep us away, we made it- a little bit wet- but we made it. Featuring 91 aziende across Italy, we tasted at about 8 different tables.
Whats great about these events is that you can find producers and their wines, that are sold mainly within their regions and hardly anywhere else to taste. One of these wines is Moscato di Scanzo- by whom the producer for this was Tallarini.
The DOC wine is named after the grape and is grown in a very small region between Bergamo and Lago di d'Iseo in Lombardia, Italy. Autoctono (or original and grown only in these parts) and very rare; mainly because most moscato grapes are white, not red; this aromatic desert wine seems almost port-like. It has a deep red color, and marvelous aromas of red fruits, roses, cinnamon, cloves and liquorish. On the tongue its sweetness is inhanced and balanced by its tannicity and acidity. Great to drink by oneself, or with dry pastries, this delicious wine will leave warm memories when drunk on cold nights.
Vote 95/100

New Years in Kyoto

Over the holidays we took a 3 week trip to Japan. A truely interesting country, rich in tradition, culture, and really amazing people. Traveling around and talking to everyone we met, we realized that each city has its own traditions, art and food- it was impossible to learn everything. However we did try new foods, interesting restaurants and strong drinks. One place that really sticks out in our minds was in Kyoto. Located on the 5th floor of a building in the Pontocho area in the old city of Gion, 'Eau de Vie' is a Japanese-French infusion restaurant. Small in scale with a visable kitchen and a long wooden counter (at which we sat) and only 3 other tables, we found the menu to be most interesting. Many of the dishes were tapas sized, which was great because we were able to taste many things. One plate in particular, shown in the photo, is roasted eggplant with grilled breast of duck. Not sure what sauces or condiments they used, since english was definatly not well spoken, but the outcome was amazing! With it we opened a bottle of Valpolicella Ripasso, 2004 by Stefano Accordini. A robust wine with intense aromas and tastes- not especialy great with what we were eating, but still a great wine. Made from the Corvina grape, its called ripasso because the grapes undergo a double fermentation; leaving a stronger taste of fruits, a more noticable consistency, and a higher percentage in alcohol-15%. One of the top wines from the Veneto region, I would definatly recommend trying a Valpolicella Ripasso and non-Ripasso, both are great.

Voto 90.
